We have an amazing opportunity to use technology to help build up our minds. There are some great new apps and tools that can be used to improve our math, writing, and language skills.

We took some time to think about the topic of education.  What did we like about school?  What didn’t we like?  We think it would be pretty amazing if a kid in the Philippines or India were able to use the same sort of tools that we use here in United States to become smarter and improve their life.  Why not strive to make that happen?

Current tools we use

Here are some of the best-of-breed tools that we currently practice our skills with every week.

Duolingo is awesome.  It is a great learning tool to be able to quickly and effectively learn a language.  I have used it for the past 4 years to learn Spanish and I am looking forward to beginning to work with Portuguese soon.  The information is broken down into bite sized lessons that take about  8 minutes or so.

Elevate App has really impressed us.  It has beautiful visuals and sound effects and uses a similar methodology as Duolingo.  They break the material down into small bit sized lessons.  I am really impressed with the work that Jesse and his team have done on Elevate and have recently upgraded and bought the pro version.

Coach.me is a great tool to track all the progress you are making on your personal goals.  It has a simple and effective design and you can easily swipe to check off the events that you achieve.  They have even created an app for the Apple watch that helps you track your habits.

Expectations

Here are some early expectations for the Unschool we are beginning to build.

Everybody builds – First everybody needs to building and learning.  Everybody who participates in the Unschool needs to be diligent about improving themselves.

Coaches instead of teachers – In grade school we had a physical fitness coach name Mr. Kane. Mr. Kane would make us run and run.  However he was overweight, and could barely run himself.  I always thought it was interesting that he pushed so hard, yet he himself would not participate. We don’t really want to do that here at the Unschool. We would like our coaches to be directly involved with improving their lives right alongside the students.

Zero ego – The ego is a funny thing. It can get in the way of being truly respect and listening to the people around us.  At the Unschool we constantly strive to keep our egos and check and to keep our heads down and focus on doing great work.
